Operations

Master adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing — the building blocks of math confidence!

What Are Operations

Operations are the basic actions you use to work with numbers. When you add you find out how many you have altogether. When you subtract you find out how many are left or how much you need to reach a goal. When you multiply you add the same number again and again to find a total faster. When you divide you share things equally or group them into parts. These four operations are the building blocks for solving all kinds of math problems.

Why Operations Matter

You use operations every day. If you want to know how much money you have after buying something you subtract. If you want to know how many candies are in a bag with 4 packets of 5 you multiply. If you want to share cookies with your friends so everyone gets the same you divide. Knowing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide makes you good at solving problems quickly and correctly.

What You Will Learn in Operations

In this section you will learn to:

  • Add numbers up to 100 and beyond
  • Subtract numbers to find what is left or missing
  • Multiply to see how repeated addition works
  • Divide to share things equally or group them
  • Solve word problems that use all four operations

Each skill will help you understand how numbers can be combined or broken apart in everyday life.

Everyday Example

Imagine you have 5 boxes of markers and each box has 6 markers inside. Instead of counting 6 markers 5 times you multiply 5 times 6 to get 30. If you give 10 markers to your friend you subtract 10 from 30 to find you have 20 left. If you want to share those 20 markers with 4 friends you divide 20 by 4 and find out each friend gets 5.
